Hello and a very warm welcome to Longview House B&B just 2 miles south of Ballymoney County Antrim.
We are a Tourism Northern Ireland registered B&B and we have a Food Hygiene rating of 5 (the highest). We are your hosts, Krissi and Chris Rochelle. Welcome!
In the beginning…
Chris and I bought this house in May 2019. It hadn’t been a ‘home’ for a long time. It was just a house – but it was a house with potential.
For such a young house (not 20 years old) it had a great deal wrong with it. We found several power points hanging off the walls, taps would just spin when we tried to turn them on because they weren’t attached to anything. Two of the showers in the bathrooms didn’t work, nor did the central heating. There was damp too.
One of the showers hadn’t been sealed properly and caused water to seep through to the Utility room and the plaster in there started to bubble and fall off.
The flooring in the house was either dark wooden floors or threadbare and wafer-thin carpets. Everything in the house was dark brown – some of the door still are …. lol
On the chimney breast in the guest lounge, the previous owners had taken a picture (or mirror) off the wall and it took a great deal of plaster with it – and that’s how we found it.
We lifted most of the flooring. All the carpets went to the tip; we took everything else back to the plaster and started again! We spent the next five months turning that “house” into (what we hope is) a welcoming home.
We hired a good bunch of Contractors to pull down a couple of walls and build new ones in different places. They created an en-suite in one of the bedrooms upstairs. We had to wait three weeks for a Plasterer which held us up, but we know that if you can get a plasterer (or a plumber for that matter) immediately, it makes you think – if they were any good they would be working constantly – surely?
Then the decorating started (and is on-going). Chris seemed to have a paintbrush attached to his hand for months!
By the beginning of October, our new home was starting to take shape and we could get new flooring and new carpet. My Mother used to tell me that a thick quality underlay and thick carpet were the biggest expense in a room but you had to have them to get it right! Thanks Mum xx
The day the carpets were laid, we opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate. After that all the furniture was brought in from storage and rooms were being created and it all started to come together.
Right now, we have two suites in our B&B. One suite is called “Carrick-a-Rede” and the other is “The Giants Causeway” named after local tourist attractions.
A double room with quality linens (Dorma), large Egyptian soft fluffy towels and a sparkling en-suite. It has plenty of storage, a flat screen television and an ‘Echo Dot’ (Amazon Alexa).
This suite also has its own private sitting room with flat screen television and an Echo Dot.
The Giant’s Causeway Suite
A large room (decadent? Oh yes, but because you’re worth it). The bed is a King size and is hand-made (The English Bed Company) with a hugging headboard. Linens are luxurious and sateen in finish. It has a large walk-in wardrobe. Table lamps provide mood lighting.
There is a Flat-Screen television and an Echo dot (Amazon Alexa). The en-suite is large. It has a luxury claw foot bath and a separate shower. The towels are large and fluffy and the toiletries are what you would expect from a high-end B&B.
The bathroom also has a chaise longue and magazines to enjoy
We have laid slabs for a garden chess area, we have started to create a garden too (there was none here when we bought the house – just grass). We have planted a copse of 12 water loving trees as we have a very high water table here.
Outside, there is a dining table and chairs, a BBQ and a seated area under the pergola for relaxing or eating al fresco. We have sun loungers too, but, if the weather is inclement, we have a log burner in the lounge to keep you cosy and warm.
Before and after…
Chris and I are here to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Nothing is too much trouble, all you have to do is ask, we’re here to help you. There is a bell on the hall table should you need something.
All that leaves me to do now is to wish you a happy stay with us and we would appreciate your comments on Google and Trip Advisor.
Krissi and Chris x
P.S. At the time of writing, I am in the process of making an album of photos showing the ‘before’ and ‘after’ of turning a cold, unloved house into a warm and welcoming home.
